Feathering

A printing defect characterized by ink spreading at the edges of a printed area, typically caused by irregularities in ink distribution on the surface of the paper. Also known as wicking.

In typography, the term feathering refers to the act of adding small amounts of leading to aid in vertical justification of a column.
