Grid

Any pattern of horizontal and vertical lines and coordinates. A bit map is one type of grid, as is a conventional halftone screen. A grid is also used as a framework in page layout and design, page elements being added to grid at geometrically precise locations. In this latter sense, each horizontal or vertical line is known as a guideline. Often, these guidelines are "magnetic", or snap-to guides, which automatically "grabs" the edge of a page element and aligns it along the line.
