Level

One of the channels in magnetic or paper tape in which a bit may be placed. Tape that carries 8-Bit bytes, then, has eight levels. Each bit may be referred to by its level; the first bit being in the first level.

In data management structures or communication protocols, the degree of subordination in a hierarchy.
