Mainframe

A computer system that is very large and powerful, thus allowing it to perform functions involving large amounts of data, such as large-scale payroll and billing applications, etc. Mainframes are also used as host computers for bulletin board systems and Internet sites. Smaller than mainframes are minicomputers and, smallest of all, are microcomputers (desktop personal computers).
