In three-dimensional object rendering, the term mapping refers to the means by which a texture is added to the surface of an object. In mapping, the texture must be added correctly with respect to the shape of the object, as well as the orientation of the "lighting" and the position of the viewer. Also, if the object is to move, the mapped texture must move with the object, as well.
