Mapping

In graphics and imaging, an abbreviated term for color mapping. See Color Mapping.

Also in graphics and imaging, mapping also refers to the act of transforming an image or graphic from one coordinate system to another.

Mapping also refers to the act of assigning characters to specific keys on a keyboard.

In three-dimensional object rendering, the term mapping refers to the means by which a texture is added to the surface of an object. In mapping, the texture must be added correctly with respect to the shape of the object, as well as the orientation of the "lighting" and the position of the viewer. Also, if the object is to move, the mapped texture must move with the object, as well.
