Mark

Any special symbol, character, or image added to the non-printing or marginal regions of a mechanical, film, plate, or print, used for such purposes as ensuring proper registration of images or colors, or to indicate the trim size of a final print. See Register Marks and Crop Marks.

A mark is also any symbol or value added to a computer code or other data set to facilitate the locating of a particular item.
