Mask

Any material or substance used to block off portions of an area for a variety of purposes. In screen printing, some form of solid or liquid masking material is used to block portions of the screen from allowing ink to pass through. In photography, masks are used to block off portions of an image or film which should not be exposed to light. In digital imaging, masks can be created electronically to also block off portions of an image. (See also Area Mask, Outline Mask, and Unsharp Mask.)
