Packing Gauge

A device used by offset printers to determine the packing height of a plate or blanket. The main body of a packing gauge is placed on the plate or blanket, with an additional feeler contacting the bearer, the metal ring attached to either end of a press cylinder. The dial on the device indicates the difference in height between the plate/blanket and the cylinder bearer. Packing height needs to be measured extremely accurately. See Packing.
