Base Stock

Term for any paper to which a coating will be applied. Depending on the various properties desired for particular end uses, the base stock will vary in all those properties, and it is necessary that the coating be compatible with these properties. It is also vital that the base stock have uniformity of formation and other surface properties so as to minimize deficiencies in the coating process. (See Coating.) The base stock is also called the raw stock, and body stock. The term base stock can also refer to the paper that will undergo any post-forming process, such as laminating, embossing, etc.
