Common Tab Stop

In typewriting and word processing, a tab setting which is used to align copy or columnar items. With a common tab stop, individual spaces can be substituted with hits of the tab key to accurately position the carriage. In typesetting and word processing, tab stops are preferable to using word spaces (via the space bar), as during justification small bits of space are added or deleted from word spaces to fill out or shorten a line.
