Common User Access

A standard developed by IBM to standardize certain aspects of Windows, the graphical user interface used on most IBM-compatible computers. The CUA was designed to provide guidelines for developers so as to create consistency from application to application. Such guidelines include having an application and/or open file reside in an on-screen window, the top of the window possessing a menu bar containing several pull-down menus containing common commands. The guidelines also specify that the user be able to resize the window in standard manner. The CUA standards also provide standard program behaviors for functions, including clickable buttons controlling common actions.
