Device Dependence

A term used to refer to any computer application or software package that generates output that can only be generated on a particular type of output device, as opposed to software that possesses device independence. Device-dependent files require for their proper output special codes, drivers, or units of measurement unique to devices having certain characteristics or manufacturers. Also known as hardware dependence.
