Dimension Sign

In typography, a "typeface-independent" cross or "X" used to indicate dimensions or the multiplication function. The character itself is centered on the cap height of the font in question. The dimension sign is typographically preferable to using the letter "x," although many typefaces do not include it. Also known as the multiplication cross.
