Discrete Cosine Transform

In data compression, a mathematical computation or process used by a compression algorithm (in the compression of digital video) that uses a specific code scheme to change picture data. Although codecs utilizing DCT make possible high compression ratios, the result is usually a slight loss of image data. (See Data Compression and Lossy.)
