Elliptical Dot

A halftone dot that is shaped like an ellipse (or oval), rather than a perfect circle or square. Elliptical dots are often used in the middle tone regions of images as a means of reducing the occurrence of dot gain, a frequent problem of middle tone areas where the increased dot size and joining of dots makes them more susceptible to gain. (See also Dot Shape.)
