Illumination

An exposure of light to an object.

In layout and design, illumination refers to the use of any non-text material (such as a drawing, photograph, or other decorative element) to enhance or clarify written material. Historically, illumination referred to the decorative illustration of handwritten manuscripts prepared by medieval scribes and monks.
