Indexing

In binding and finishing, a finishing operation in which index tabs are attached to the edges of sheets as a means of affording easy location of material contained within. Indexing may also involve the production of index thumb cuts. See Binding and Finishing.

In computing, the term indexing refers to a means of storing and retrieving data using an index key, or a list of the contents (i.e., records) of a database as well as their location, allowing the rapid access of data.
