Noise

Any unwanted signal—be it an audio, video, or electronic signal—that "contaminates" an audio or videotape, an electrical system, or a voice or data transmission. In audio and voice-grade telecomunications, noise is characterized by static; in video, it is characterized by bursts of snow; in data transmissions, it can be characterized in retrospect as garbled data or errors.
