Pipe

Term for the short vertical symbol (|) found as the shift of the backslash key on computer keyboards. Not often typeset, it is primarily used in computer documentation.

In computing, the term pipe is used to refer to a portion of a computer's memory that is used by a specific command to transfer data to a second command for processing. A specific type of pipe used in interprocess communication is called a named pipe. In some operating systems, a pipe is symbolized by the pipe symbol (|).
