Power Surge

A brief, sudden increase in electrical voltage which can damage the internal components of a computer or other electronic device. Power surges can have many causes, ranging from nearby electric appliances such as photocopiers or elevators or lightning strikes. Power surges are often combatted by means of a variety of power conditioning devices, in particular surge protectors.
