Shift

In typography, a function on typewriters, typesetters, and computer keyboards used to generate an uppercase character. The term derives from the days of hot-metal typesetters when the shift key "shifted" the font-matrix sorting mechanism to a position which could access uppercase characters.

In spreadsheet or other data programs, shift means to move all characters in a row or column en masse to an adjacent row or column.
