A popular brand of removable magnetic cartridge used for the storage and transport of computer files and data. SyQuest cartridges are available in a variety of sizes and capacities: the first size was a 5.25-inch cartridge with a capacity of 44 megabytes, which was followed by an 88 megabyte version. There is also a 3.5-inch size, with capacities up to 270 megabytes. Although for many years SyQuest cartridges were the most popular brand of external storage and transport medium, the incompatibilities between drives and disk capacities (for example, for a while a drive designed to read and write to an 88 MB cartridge could only read 44 MB cartridges, and so forth) as well as the appearance of less expensive media (in particular Iomega's Zip disks) has eroded their prevalence.
