Accelerator

A substance or process that expedites the rate at which another process is carried out. For example, a chemical ink drier or a high-temperature oven are two means of accelerating the drying of a printing ink.

In computing, especially in the Windows environment, the term accelerator refers to a keyboard shortcut, or a keystroke that initiates a function without needing to serach out the menu containing the function.
