Aspect Ratio

The ratio, typically expressed as a decimal (e.g., 1.85:1) or a ratio of integers (e.g., 16:9), of the height to the width of any rectangular area, be it a television screen, a movie screen, a window, or a photographic image. For example, the aspect ratio of a standard television screen is 4:3. In graphics and imaging, this ratio is important in the reproduction of images.
