A thin, supplemental gear attached to a spur gear so as to reduce the occurrence of play, an undesired, unimpeded circumferential movement of meshing gears. Older offset press cylinders (such as the plate cylinder or blanket cylinder) utilize spur gears and backlash gears. Newer presses tend to use cylinders equipped with helical gears, which by design reduce play between themselves. (See Plate Cylinder.)
