A means of effecting flat tones or shades on a line drawing or line plate by means of dot or line patterns or a screen. Originally, benday process referred to the process used by its inventor, Benjamin Day, now used to refer to any such process. However, it is now an obsolete process, having been replaced by photographic screen tints.
