A paper defect characterized by a wide indentation in the surface of a paper's coating running in the grain direction, caused by a large particle becoming attached to the back of the blade on a blade coater, which then carves a wide furrow in the applied coating as the web travels past it. A particle can also cut right through the web, producing a blade cut, or carve a narrow, hairline streak, called a blade scratch. A blade streak is also known as a blade mark.
