In typography, the characters {}, used for parenthetical expressions. Although not widely used in general text material, braces are used in mathematics (particularly in equations) and computer programming to group certain elements together. Braces—also known as curly braces—are usually used third in the parenthetical progression, the first being parentheses, the second being brackets, as in a(b[c{d + e}]).
