Any magnetic tape-based medium housed in a stiff plastic shell, used for the storage and backup of computer files or other information. Cartridge media include things such as SyQuest cartridges, Zip disks, magnetic audio tape, etc. Floppy disks are not, however, considered cartridges. Such materials are also known as data cartridges. Some cartridges are also known as cassettes.
Other materials, such as photocopier or laser printer toner is also stored in cartridges.
