In video production, the color portion—red, green, or blue—of a video signal as recorded by a video camera on videotape. In video terminology, chrominance (often abbreviated simply chroma) exists apart from luminance, or the brightness of a video signal. A video image which is described as high chroma is overly intense, and tends to bleed, while a low chroma image looks pale and washed out.. In television broadcasting, both chrominance and luminance information is broadcast. On black-and-white televisions, the chrominance information is ignored, the luminance information being the only important component needed to reproduce the image.
