Code

Any set of rules that defines how data are to be represented, or how data can be translated from one representation to another. An example is computer code. Such codes are used to translate data from a representation that a human (the operator or programmer) can understand to a language that the computer itself can understand, and vice versa. In computer terminology, then, a code is any set of computer instructions.
