Default

Any preset value that a computer system or program will use in the processing of data when no user-specified value has been indicated. A default setting is one which the computer will "fall back on" for want of other instructions. For example, some word processing programs will by default use 12-point Geneva type on 12 points of leading, unless the user deliberately changes it. In some cases—such as imaging applications—the default settings are those believed by the software developer to be the most desirable settings. However, this is not always the case.
