A system developed by Dolby Labs that splits a two-channel audio signal into four separate signals. With the appropriate placement of four speakers connected to an audio system with the surround sound capability, a "you are in the middle of everything" effect can be achieved. Originally used in movie theaters, it is now available on many types of home audio and video systems. The four-way sound is achieved using special codes, which are ignored when the surround sound hardware is not available, allowing productions recorded using surround sound to be played on non-surround-sound hardware.
