Characters inserted in the left margin of lines to be identified as belonging to different Fields for searching. When a Tag File is read by a text indexer, the declared width of the tags is subtracted from the width of the Display File, so that the tags do not appear on the screen. Nonetheless, they continue to mark certain lines as belonging to different fields for searching.
