Flash

In phototypesetting, to shine a light source through a character image, exposing the character onto photosensitive paper. The flash is also the device that controls this character exposure.

In typography, the term flash also refers to emphasized text, such as that printed as a reverse, in a different color, or with a frame of some sort.
