Gamma Correction

A modification of the contrast of a photographic image by means of adjusting the tone curves for the image. Essentially, gamma correction involves increasing or decreasing the middle tone value, depending upon the desired correction. For example, a reproduction of a red fire hydrant may reproduce too dark. By reducing the middle tone, the dark color—cyan—will be reduced, allowing the lighter color—magenta—to peek through to a greater extent and make the image brighter. Gamma correction—also called tone correction—is often incorrectly confused with color correction. (See also Contrast.)
