Guard

In binding and finishing, a thin strip of muslin, paper, or other material to which inserts (or other tipped-in materials) are attached for binding into a book or other publication. A guard is often wrapped around a signature prior to sewing. A guard wrapped around the first and last signatures of a book is called a reinforced endsheet or a guarded signature. The process of adding a guard to a signature is called guarding.
