Hanging Punctuation

In typography, punctuation marks (commonly hyphens) that extend beyond the left and/or right margin of justified type. Purportedly a modern invention—it is commonly performed for purposes of optical justification—it was actually employed by Gutenberg in his Bible. Also called hung punctuation.
