Local Area Network

A network of linked computers occupying a small geographic area, such as an office, in contrast to a wide area network, which encompasses a larger area. Essentially, a cable connects the various workstations, as well as peripheral devices such as CD-ROM drives, printers, etc. LANs typically do not use such international or national networks such as ISDN, or even the telephone network.
