Essentially, any form of data which is in digital format and can be read by a computer. In the early days of computing, machine-readable referred to information encoded on punch cards and paper tape, but which now refers to any—usually magnetically or optically stored—data. The term can also refer to text that has been typed in such a manner that it can be scanned by optical character recognition equipment.
