Any original handwritten or typed copy from which type will be set. Although the term manuscript (deriving from the Latin terms manus—"hand"—and scriptus—"written") technically only refers to copy written by hand, it is commonly used to refer to what could more properly be called a typescript. Manuscript is commonly abbreviated ms., and the plural is abbreviated mss.
