Metering Nip

The line of contact between a soft, rubber-covered metering roller and a hard, chrome-covered transfer roller found in an offset press's continuous-flow dampening system. The width of the metering nip controls how much fountain solution is delivered from the fountain to the plate, and this nip can be varied. The angle at which the two rollers contact each other can also be varied, providing more or less metering of the film of fountain solution at the edges or the center, depending on the fountain solution requirements of the plate. (See Dampening System.)
