Descriptive of any system or device—in particular, a page make-up system—that is more expensive and of higher quality than low-end desktop systems, but less expensive and of lesser quality than high-end color electronic publishing systems. Midrange refers more to cost than output quality, however. Midrange systems usually are cannibalizations of both the desktop and high-end systems; they may use desktop computers, but high-end film recorders, imagesetters, or scanners. They may use off-the-shelf software, or special applications, and may or may not use PostScript output. A midrange system is generally considered to be in the $250,000 range for a computer, scanner, proofing device, and film recorder.
