An NT1 is an ISDN network terminator. The line coming from the phone company plugs into this hardware. The NT1 converts the U interface, the line from the phone company, into the T interface, the wiring that plugs into the ISDN TE. The NT1 must be powered locally, so to guarantee uninterrupted phone service during a power outage, you need to have the NT1 running on an uninterruptible power supply. The NT1 often supplies power to TEs.
