A type of dryer (or floating dryer) used on a web press in which a heat source heats the air within an enclosed space through which the web passes to a very high temperature (often as high as 600ºF). The open-flame dryer (also called a direct-impingement dryer) is the oldest form of drying equipment. A commonly-used alternative is the high-velocity hot-air dryer.
