The OSF was formed in May of 1988 to develop a new operating system environment based on the UNIX standard. Initial funding was provided by Apollo Computer, Groupe Bull, Digital, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Nixdorf Computer, and Siemens. The foundation was created in response to an earlier announcement that AT&T and Sun Microsystems would jointly create a new standard.
