Operation

An action which is definable by a single instruction.

Parallel operation: The simultaneous performance of several actions, usually of similar nature.

Real-time operation: A method of processing data in which the actions of the system are based on response to requests from other devices or from operators, and cannot be changed for convenience in programming.

Serial operation: The flow of information through a communications line or computer in time sequence, one following another.

Defined action of steps executed by a computer; e.g., addition, multiplication, extraction, comparison, shift, and transfer.

1. Performance of practical work or involving pratcial application of principles or process. 2. Single step performed by a computer in execution of a program.
