The nineteenth letter of the English alphabet, derived from North Semitic, by way of the Greek sigma. In North Semitic, the letter representing the "S" sound resembled the modern "W," while the Greek sigma essentially rotated that letter 90º to the right. The curved form of the "S" in both upper- and lowercase forms was developed in Latin.
