Paper especially formulated with a protective background to show erasures, or other means to expose forgery or document alterations, such as paper used for checks, bonds, bank slips, coupons, tickets, warranties, and legal forms. They must possess high durability, in particular paper used for checks, which must withstand payer and payee handling, as well as check-sorting equipment. (See also MICR Check Paper.) The basic size of safety papers is 17 x 22, and comes in a basis weight of 24-pound.
