Scavenger Marks

Deliberate etching of non-image areas of the gravure cylinder to facilitate the removal of trapped particles of ink (or other material) from the back of the doctor blade. Scavenger marks are most commonly used on packaging presses, and need to correspond to non-printing areas of the substrate which can eventually be removed in finishing operations. See Doctor Blade.
